Select Board · Meeting of August 19, 2026

Nahant sets an October 20 special town meeting to fund a $4 million library overhaul. The Select Board voted 3-0 to put forward a warrant article committing $1 million in Coast Guard housing proceeds, paid in two $500,000 installments, as a match for roughly $3 million the library's trustees and Friends are raising privately. Member Pat O'Reilly pushed to make the town's share explicitly contingent on full project funding, but town counsel warned the state Department of Revenue tends to reject contingency language in warrant articles, calling his own position "my law degree is still at the store." The board also created a Veterans Donation Fund at the request of Veterans Service Officer Bob Fields, who called it a response to "a burden on the town," and agreed to reestablish a short-term rental committee after acknowledging the current owner-occupied rule is, in members' words, essentially unenforceable.

Resident Kerry Collins criticized the board's new two-minute public-comment limit as "really sad."
