Nahant School Committee adopts mandatory student restraint and seclusion policy

School Committee · Meeting of May 26, 2026

Nahant School Committee adopts expanded student-restraint policy ahead of August state deadline. The board voted unanimously at its May 26 meeting to replace a two-page existing policy with a nine-to-ten-page state-mandated policy governing timeout, seclusion, and physical restraint of students, effective August 17, 2026. The committee also approved a bill roll of $35,482.50, gave first reading to a student medication self-administration policy set for a second reading and vote at the next meeting, and heard that the school's IT specialist had resigned.

Principal's report flagged an open 0.6 FTE administrative director-and-team-chair position that remains difficult to fill due to commuting challenges and a thin applicant pool. A joint School Committee and Select Board meeting was noted as upcoming to address a current school committee vacancy.
